LOWER SCHOOL
The Lower School at St. John Berchmans School is characterized by an emphasis on active learning, small classes and a professional faculty. The faculty's ongoing commitment to the learning styles of boys ensures that students are exposed to coursework that addresses their needs. A low student-faculty ratio allows for a focus on each child's talents and interests. From the youngest students to those preparing for the transition to Middle School, St. John Berchmans offers an education tailored to young men.

Lower School students are taught religion, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and physical education. Beginning in pre-kindergarten, students meet weekly for instruction in Spanish, music, art and technology.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Middle School builds upon the coursework begun in the Lower School. The goal of the program is to develop life-long learners. Emphasis of the Middle School is on individual thought and experiential instruction. The same characteristics found in the Lower School are present in the Middle School: active learning, small classes and a professional faculty committed to the learning styles of young men. A commitment to writing is evident in the increased class time for language arts to include writing periods. The Middle School is a time when students are introduced to great works of literature from around the world through the Junior Great Books program while building their reading, thinking and communication slills.

Mathematics continues to focus on active learning while emphasizing problem-solving and analytical thought. The program is designed to build upon the coursework in the Lower School by providing a transition to and a solid foundation in algebra.

Science instruction is activity based with emphasis on experiments and scientific methods in the life, physical and Earth sciences. The social studies curriculum enhances the students' awareness and understanding of people and global issues by exploring history.

The religion program is a continuation of the Lower School curriculum. It strives to heighten student awareness of their own spirituality and guide them towards ethical decision making.

In addition to being integrated through the curriculum, technology instruction begins in lower school and continues into middle school. The focus of this instruction is ethical and proper usage and keyboarding skills. Students also continue their courses in Spanish, music, art, technology and physical education.

ATHLETICS & EXTRACURRICULARS
St. John Berchmans is a dynamic, growing community committed to providing the best possible experience for all students. The school is aware of the value of a healthy athletic and extracurricular program. Expansion plans for the school include such activities. Presently, students at St. John Berchmans participate in soccer. Expanding the opportunities in both athletics and extracurricular activities in a high priority as the school grows. The experiences and skills developed by participation in such events offers students the chance to further explore their talents and interests while building life skills such as leadership, dedication and teamwork. A full program including athletics and extracurricular activities is anticipated and is being planned for with the input of both students and their families.

The very intention of Sacred Heart education is to educate the "whole child." We encourage our students to identify their individual talents and to develop them to their fullest potential. This is the tradition of Sacred Heart.
